2023.06.10.Traveling in US: US Air Force Museum

Because I already stayed in the hotel for 2 days last weekend, I can’t stay in the hotel this weekend, otherwise, I would not make good use of this trip abroad. The place I’m going to today is a bit far away, United State Air Force Museum, which displays a lot of planes, from the invention of planes, to the planes used in World War I, to World War II, and then to the Korean War, Vietnam War, Cold War, and new era planes, as well as space shuttles and Air Force One, the president’s plane. From where I live to the museum, it takes more than 3 hours to drive without rest. Since I was driving alone, I couldn’t do it without any break, actually, I took 2 breaks along the way :-)

The first time I took a break, I came down and ate something, replenished some energy, and took the opportunity to visit the rest area of the American highway. They don’t call it a service area, so there’s no supermarket or anything like that, just toilets and vending machines.

I find one good example for the difference in language. I missed a service area, because the roadside sign said Next Rest Area 64 Miles, I changed the lane to the middle, and acceleration… and then I was at the next rest area right away…

Finally I noticed that there is another sign: rest area next right. I seem to have missed this sign, I only saw the second picture below, and I thought the next exit was 67 miles away, so I didn’t go on the far right lane, and when I saw the roadside parking rest area, it was too late… So I was thinking, Next, in English seems to mean something different from Chinese… Question: if today is Monday, when is Next Thursday, is it in this week, or in the next week? What if today is Friday?
In Chinese, we say it like: Friday in this week, or Friday in next week, or Friday in last week.

Another feeling on the road is the road quality, when going to Ohio, it is not very obvious, because the road is from bad to good, this kind of situation is not so easy to make people notice. But it was very obvious when I came back, that is, the I-75 road quality in Ohio is very good, it is asphalt pavement, and Pure Michigan’s I-75 road is very average, it is concrete pavement, driving is very uncomfortable; I have a deep feeling about this, because I always thought that American roads are like this concrete pavement since I have never been out of Michigan, and the previous impression is that America developed earlier, infrastructure was completed many years ago, so it is normal to be a little old for everything. Another reason is because this is similar to what I encountered in China. I work in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province (similar to states), but my hometown is in Anhui Province, Anhui’s roads are very broken, Jiangsu’s roads are very good, this kind of situation still exists even now, every Friday night when I go back to Anhui, it is Jiangsu’s street lights that send me to the border of Jiangsu province, and then what greets me is Anhui province’s endless night and bumpy road~

The planes in the Air Force Museum:

The Only B2 Bomber in this world:

Today I happened to see a plane show, and I caught the Flyoff, it was quite lucky, I saw the plane performance up close, but they did not do a lot of complex movements in the air. I made a video for this one.

One intuitive feeling is that the planes of World War II, compared to World War I, had a great improvement in quality, and I also saw the shape and installation position of the plane engine on the spot. Further back, the development of planes was more about some optimization and comfort improvement, such as Air Force One presidential ride, which has comfortable seats, phones, conference rooms, and even a kitchen.

The museum does not charge admission, and they do not require to check ID here. You can only bring bottled water in, but I forgot to bring water today. But I saw this here, there is also this in the rest area on highway, but I did not know what this was at the time. I saw someone use this to drink water in the museum, I realized that this is how it is used, I thought it was for washing hands at first, but it does not sense water by itself… Later I found out that our American company’s office also has this facility…

At the entering of museum, there are a lot of staff. they briefly introduced us to the situation of the museum, and then we can visit on our own.

In addition, there is a hall in the museum that is the American Air Force Hall of Fame, all kinds of outstanding talents will enter the Hall of Fame, this has a positive educational significance for children, I believe in the power of role models.

Although there are so many planes, but these planes are all tools of war, I hope that mankind can stay away from war, cherish peace. Recently I read a book that said China’s rise will inevitably bring about a redistribution of global power, the formation of an imbalance in some regions will lead to an unstable state, and this could lead to war… But we always say peaceful rise, hope there will be no war.

here is a picture from World War II:

Hope that planes can bring more convenience to people’s travel, better understand and use outer space, and future interstellar travel, after all, the stars and sea are our destination.

2023.08.05.Ann.Arbor.Michigan.University

When I first arrived in the United States, my roommate told me that I could go to the University of Michigan to take a look, which is where he went to school. I thought it was a good idea, but I never got around to it. A few weeks ago, while watching TV, I found out that Yang Zhenning actually studied at the University of Michigan. This world is really amazing. So this weekend, I decided to go and take a look. American universities don't have walls, so there's no clear boundary between what belongs to the school and what doesn't. Today, I went to the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History: Here are two mammoths: On the medicinal value of plants: This exhibit reflects the double helix structure of DNA. I feel like this museum is a great place for science education, and it's free. How different are fruit flies from humans? How do cells exchange information with each other? Here are some real-life examples of mineral resources that we often talk about in our dail...

2023.05.14.Traveling in US: Visit Max House

The first weekend I came to the United States, I was invited by my colleague Max to visit his home. I could get a close look at the living conditions of the American people. Max is the supervisor of one of our teams, so I guess his income is okay. I don’t know if he lives in a town or a countryside, but what I can be sure of is that he lives in a residential area~ (nonsense) From the hotel where I live to his home, it’s only more than 10 minutes by car. In the United States, you have to use driving time to calculate wherever you go, because they are far apart and walking is unrealistic.
