2023.09.Last Chapter.Before I leave Detroit

The whole month of September was spent in the mood of preparing to go back home.

Since the beginning of the month, I thought about meeting the people I wanted to see and going to the places I wanted to visit, but I ended up having some regrets that some of the places I wanted to visit didn't work out.

From the time I arrived in Detroit, Pikes said he wanted to invite me to his home, but because his daughter took his car away for the summer vacation, he did not have a car and it was not convenient for him to move around, so he waited until September 9, before I went back to finally make it happen.

This is his yard, and the house on the right is his, also a wooden (drywall) structure. He doesn't just keep chickens, he's also a beekeeper, brewer, and carpenter. He gave me a tour of his wine making equipment and explained some of the different wine products to me. Considering I was going back home, he suggested we make a souvenir together to take back with us. What to make? Looking around at the wood, how about a wooden dinner spoon to represent Pikes hope that I can always have something to eat with in the future.

His woodworking and brewing areas (a bit of a mess):

I also recorded a special segment of the rice spoon making process:

I had a long chat with them that night and I didn't get back until 10pm.

On Thursday evening, September 14, Dale's classmate invited me to watch his son's school playground for a soccer game (it's a middle school league).

Their games are pretty formal, with referees and time boards (picture 2 below). He said that his son had 3 games a week recently, and that it was a league with a nearby school, and that the players all joined voluntarily, as a hobby, and that there was no income from the games. However, the school does sell tickets for $10 a game, and neighborhood residents or parents come to watch the games, and parents have to buy tickets. I saw his son cover quite a bit of ground on the field that day, appearing in different positions in one game, defender in the first half, forward in the second half, and doing quite well.

This weekend (Sept. 16), Dale's classmate also invited me to his home, so I stopped by for a tour. His family lives a little south of Dearborn, and I've heard that houses are generally bigger on the south side. His house was newly built not more than a few years ago. In order to keep the little kids under their noses as much as possible, his house also has a swimming pool, so the kids love to come to his house to play.

There was also a small river in front of his house:

His house was down to some brick:

Halloween is coming up and his house is decorated, isn't it a little scary:

Thanks to all my coworkers for taking care of me! I'll see you again!

Thank you!

2023.08.05.Ann.Arbor.Michigan.University

When I first arrived in the United States, my roommate told me that I could go to the University of Michigan to take a look, which is where he went to school. I thought it was a good idea, but I never got around to it. A few weeks ago, while watching TV, I found out that Yang Zhenning actually studied at the University of Michigan. This world is really amazing. So this weekend, I decided to go and take a look. American universities don't have walls, so there's no clear boundary between what belongs to the school and what doesn't. Today, I went to the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History: Here are two mammoths: On the medicinal value of plants: This exhibit reflects the double helix structure of DNA. I feel like this museum is a great place for science education, and it's free. How different are fruit flies from humans? How do cells exchange information with each other? Here are some real-life examples of mineral resources that we often talk about in our dail...

2023.05.14.Traveling in US: Visit Max House

The first weekend I came to the United States, I was invited by my colleague Max to visit his home. I could get a close look at the living conditions of the American people. Max is the supervisor of one of our teams, so I guess his income is okay. I don’t know if he lives in a town or a countryside, but what I can be sure of is that he lives in a residential area~ (nonsense) From the hotel where I live to his home, it’s only more than 10 minutes by car. In the United States, you have to use driving time to calculate wherever you go, because they are far apart and walking is unrealistic.
